Carved Wood Antique Foo Dog, or Guardian Lion
This full of character protection Lion is more aesthetically sober and more friendly than we are used to seeing in the world of Imperial Lions, or "Foo Dogs"
It is carved by hand from a single piece of wood, and still has more than a hint of its former gold leaf, red and brown pigment (or lacquer) finish
It is well-loved and seems to have been at work guarding a special place for a long time. It has small notches at the bottom that seem to indicate it was mounted somewhere intended for it. This particular lion, from the ball under its paw, is the male of a pair, symbolizing it is protecting the material world- home, temple, or sacred space
Particularly beautiful carving detail on the back of the lion, along the mane and spine. Truly special
